Patio vs Balcony Growing: What Actually Changes

Why this is worth spelling out

The Container Starter Guide covers balconies and patios together, on purpose — the core method (containers, no digging, no permanent structures) is identical either way. I’ve grown in both over the years, and “identical method” isn’t the same as “identical space” — a few real differences change what’s actually worth prioritising depending on which one you’ve got.

Wind is the biggest hidden difference

An elevated balcony, especially above the second or third floor, sits in meaningfully stronger and more constant wind than a ground-level patio a few metres away. Wind doesn’t just risk knocking pots over — it dries out compost far faster than the same plant would experience at ground level, and it physically stresses stems, which is part of why balcony-grown plants often need staking sooner and more securely than the same variety on a patio. A patio, especially one with a fence, wall, or the house itself on one side, is usually far more sheltered by comparison.

Weight is a balcony problem, not really a patio one

Compost is heavy once watered — a large container can weigh 20–30kg or more when fully wet. A patio sits on solid ground, so this is rarely a real constraint. A balcony is a structural element of the building, and many UK leases and building regulations do specify weight limits, often concentrated near the edges rather than spread evenly. It’s genuinely worth checking your lease or asking before filling a balcony with several large containers — not a step a patio grower needs to think about at all.

Patios usually just have more usable floor space

A balcony’s footprint is fixed by the building; a patio is often larger, and more of it is realistically usable, since you’re not balancing container weight against a railing’s load limit. That extra room is what enables some of the bigger patio-friendly crops — courgettes, potatoes in grow bags, larger tomato varieties — that are a harder fit on a balcony where every container is competing for a small, weight-limited footprint.

Light behaves differently in each

A balcony’s light is usually more consistent through the day, since it’s elevated above surrounding obstructions. A ground-level patio is more likely to be partially shaded for part of the day by the house, a fence, or a neighbouring building — worth actually watching for a day before assuming a patio spot gets the 6+ hours of direct sun most fruiting crops want. What this means in practice

Neither space is “easier” outright — a patio trades wind and weight problems for a higher chance of partial shade and, sometimes, less direct light exposure. The guide’s method doesn’t change either way; what changes is which of its checks actually apply to you. A balcony grower should check their lease’s weight allowance and plan for more frequent watering; a patio grower should track their actual sun hours before choosing what to grow, rather than assuming ground-level automatically means full sun.
