Our approach

Grow more food in the space you've got

You don't need a traditional garden to make growing your own food part of everyday life. A balcony, patio or collection of containers can offer more possibilities than you might imagine.

No Garden Required helps you make the most of that space, with practical advice and free tools for growing food in small UK spaces.

Why No Garden Required exists

I started No Garden Required because I believe small-space growing deserves to be taken seriously — and that a well-planned collection of containers can produce a worthwhile amount of food.

There's something satisfying about picking ingredients you've grown yourself. Beans for dinner, fresh herbs from the windowsill or salad leaves you can harvest again and again.

With thoughtful planning, those small harvests can become a regular part of how you eat.

Whether you rent your home, have a paved courtyard or want to make better use of a small patio, No Garden Required is here to help you get started and build on what works.

A little planning opens up possibilities

Working out how everything fits together is part of the pleasure of growing.

Where should the pots go? Which crops deserve the sunniest spot? What can you plant when the first crop finishes?

Choosing suitable crops, arranging containers well and planning through the seasons can make a difference to what you harvest — and how easily you can look after it.

Thoughtful planting design brings those decisions together, helping you create a productive space that suits your home, the food you enjoy and the time you have.

You can begin with one container and build from there.
