Right now, in September: Plant overwintering onion sets; harvest squash and the last of the tomatoes.

Weekend Jobs

Your weekend growing jobs

Real, seasonal small-space tasks — deadheading, pruning, harvesting, composting, whatever's actually relevant this week — not a generic checklist reused all year. Each checklist is dated so you can see when it applies.

Coming this weekend · 18 September 2026

  1. Harvest any tomatoes still on the vine before the first properly cold nights — green ones will ripen indoors on a windowsill.
  2. Plant overwintering onion sets now for a harvest next June or July — garlic wants to wait for real cold, so hold off on that until October (see the full garlic checklist for hardneck vs softneck and why timing matters).
  3. Deadhead any herbs still flowering, like chives or borage, to keep them producing leaves rather than setting seed.
