Right now, in September: Plant overwintering onion sets; harvest squash and the last of the tomatoes.

Grow Food on a Windowsill

For beginners with no outdoor space at all: assess your window, choose a suitable crop, grow it, and work towards your first edible harvest.

You'll choose one crop — pea shoots, baby salad leaves or established chives — and follow it through planting and harvest. You pick one project, not all three.

  • Beginner level
  • 5 modules
  • 1 project, chosen from 3
  • Self-paced — go whenever you're ready

This course doesn't promise a year-round supply, a guaranteed yield, or a harvest by a fixed date — real plants respond to real light and real seasons. It teaches you to work with that, not override it. No grow light is required for any project in this course. You can start at any time of year; a brighter season generally means faster, more certain results.

What you'll be working towards

A windowsill that's actually producing food you'd choose to grow again, using whichever of the three starter projects suits your space.
